Candidate Shortage Hits Northern Jobs Market

Last month, the recruitment team at XCL saw a surge in demand for staff across all sectors in Yorkshire, and looking at a recent industry report covering jobs in the North of England, we were not alone in noticing the trend.

According to the latest IHS Markit/REC Report on Jobs, job vacancies and recruitment activity across the North of England continued to increase in August, driving an overall upturn in employment. Permanent staff appointments saw the most rapid growth, increasing for the 64th consecutive month, and at its fastest rate since February.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive at the REC, says: “Businesses are getting on with it driving Britain’s growth – jobs are being created and starting salaries are rising. There are big opportunities out there for candidates right now looking for a new role.”

However, despite a significant rise in demand for staff, around 37% of companies surveyed reported a steep decline in the number of candidates available to fill their vacancies. Key roles that were in short supply were accountants, construction workers, developers, drivers, engineers and lawyers, among other professionals.

Temporary billings through recruitment agencies also increased last month, although at a softer rate than permanent appointments. Many employers reported that this growth was hindered by shortages in the supply of qualified candidates as well as counter offers - highlighting the importance of creating effective job ads that attract the best candidates.
