Manufacturing jobs are becoming more difficult than ever for employers to fill directly due to the ongoing shortage of experienced candidates, a new report has revealed.
December 2018 brought modest improvement in overall business conditions for the manufacturing sector, with levels of new business from both domestic and international markets growing to a 10-month high. This rise in new orders is believed to be due, in part, to clients building up stocks to reduce the potential impact of Brexit, alongside a weaker exchange rate driving demand for exports.
Some manufacturers also cited new product launches and successful promotional activity as contributors to new sales growth, with many maintaining a positive outlook heading into 2019.
However, while many businesses were enjoying an uplift in orders, the sector faced its biggest worker shortage in 30 years. In fact, The British Chamber of Commerce said that out of 6,000 employers surveyed, 81% of manufacturers reported they they struggled to recruit skilled staff towards the end of 2018.
The employment rate currently stands at its highest since 1971, at a time where net migration from the EU has fallen to a six-year low, leading to employers across the UK experiencing difficulties finding and hiring new staff.
