Engineering Skills Shortage Hits Northern Jobs Market

At XCL Group we have noticed a surge in demand for skilled workers to fill engineering and manufacturing jobs in the Huddersfield area, along with a shortage in high-quality candidates for the roles - and a new industry report shows we are not the only ones to have observed the trend.

The latest REC/IHS Markit study showed that while the number of permanent jobs in the north of England filled by recruitment agencies increased in September, the rate of growth was the slowest since May. The trend was similar in the temporary jobs market.

Researchers identified the ongoing skills shortage in a number of industries as the main reason for the slowdown.

Engineering is one of the sectors particularly badly hit (along with IT, accounting and care), with the number of skilled workers seeking jobs sliding during September. Good news if you are looking for your next career move, but a real problem for the many Yorkshire employers seeking to add to their workforce.

Kevin Green, REC Chief Executive, noted that it was becoming increasingly difficult to fill vacancies for both skilled workers and production roles.

“Candidate availability has been falling for the past four years and the record high UK employment rate plus a slowdown in the number of EU nationals coming to work here is exacerbating the situation, potentially leaving roles unfilled,” he warned.
