Mechanical Design Engineer Job Profile

Description & Responsibilities

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the development of new products. While the specific nature of your role will depend on the products made, you are likely to be required to:

  • Develop product designs and produce mechanical drawings
  • Provide technical support to the production team
  • Produce design briefs for CAD Technicians
  • Check and approve drawings supplied by CAD Technicians
  • Ensure all designs are safe and mechanically sound
  • Liaise with clients to achieve the required solution for the project within budget

Typical Salary

Depending on the seniority of the position, and the size of the projects you are working on, a Mechanical Design Engineer may earn anywhere between £28,000 and £50,000 per annum.

Required Experience & Qualifications

To become a Mechanical Design Engineer, most employers will require you to have the following skills and experience:

  • Relevant engineering degree or professional qualification
  • Previous work experience in mechanical or production engineering
  • Experience using AutoCAD
  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor
  • Proactive, methodical and organised approach to working
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing process
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively convey technical information
  • Forward thinking, recognises the need to implement changes and regularly comes up with new ideas
